Aviva Stanoff is a textile designer and the founder of Aviva Stanoff Design. Beginning her practice on the Lower East Side of New York, she brought to it a graduate education in surface design from San Francisco – dimensional techniques rooted in biophilic design, patterns drawn from nature, from actual botanicals pressed into cloth, their impressions transferred directly into the surface.
Her work attracted the attention of Christian Dior Couture, Givenchy Couture, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Li Edelkoort, among the many clients and commissions of that period. She launched her own home collection at her 2004 Brooklyn Designs debut, earning a New York Times "Best Bet" and opening doors with Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys, Takashimaya, and ABC Home, among others. Seventeen of her works were acquired into the Brooklyn Museum's permanent collection in 2011.
Found in her creations, what might be called an eye for enchantment was first illuminated by her childhood spent among old-growth redwoods and inside a temple. Growing up between California's ancient forests and ceremonial summers in her family's Buddhist temple in Japan, she attained an intimate attunement to intuitive beauty, one that continues to direct the studio's work. Her companions in this work are handcrafted textiles and finely curated crystals. Both praise a softer order of nature.
A designer, a mother, and a first-generation American of Japanese heritage, Aviva sees lineage, sustainability, and awareness as ongoing commitments of her studio. Hiro's Table, a facet of this work, was inspired by her son. The initiative supports neurodiverse families through inclusion-focused activations, art projects, and fundraising.
